Question 1

How do I train my dog to be an emotional support dog?

Accepted Answer

Start with practical companion skills. Attention, settling, basic cues, recall, loose-leash walking, polite greetings, comfortable handling, independence, and calm behavior around reasonable distractions.
There's no federal ESA obedience curriculum. If you need the dog to perform individually trained disability-related work or tasks, you're describing service dog training instead.

Question 2

Should an emotional support dog be trained?

Accepted Answer

Yes, even though service-dog task training isn't what defines an ESA. Basic manners make the dog easier and safer to live with. Settling, recall, leash walking, and calm greetings are good places to start.

Question 3

How do I qualify my dog as an emotional support dog?

Accepted Answer

Training and housing accommodations are separate issues. A dog trainer can't determine whether someone has a disability or qualifies for a housing accommodation.

HUD's Fair Housing Act materials cover assistance animals and the reasonable-accommodation process. Don't confuse a purchased registration, certificate, ID card, or vest with that process.

Question 4

Does an emotional support dog have to pass a test?

Accepted Answer

Federal housing guidance doesn't set up a required ESA obedience test. A manners program or test still makes a useful training goal, but passing one isn't the same as establishing a disability-related housing accommodation.

Question 5

Can an emotional support dog go anywhere a service dog can?

Accepted Answer

No. Under the ADA, comfort through presence alone doesn't make a dog a service animal. Service dogs are individually trained to perform work or tasks directly related to a person's disability.

State and local laws may add rules or protections.

Question 6

Can emotional support dogs fly?

Accepted Answer

Your dog may be able to travel under an airline's pet policy, but ESA status doesn't make it a service animal under DOT's current air-travel rule.

Check current DOT information and your airline's policy before you go.

Question 7

What's the Difference Between an Emotional Support Dog and a Psychiatric Service Dog?

Accepted Answer

Trained disability-related work or tasks. An emotional support dog provides comfort through its presence. A psychiatric service dog is individually trained to perform work or tasks directly related to its handler's disability.

Question 8

How Much Does Emotional Support Dog Training Cost?

Accepted Answer

There's no national price, because there's no federally required ESA training course.

What it costs depends on what your dog needs and how you want to train. Some owners work on their own, some take group obedience classes, some need private sessions for one specific problem.

Be careful about paying extra just because ordinary dog training has been packaged as "ESA certification."
