Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Fast CAT is a 100-yard timed dash where dogs chase a lure on a straight track, while Lure Coursing involves dogs chasing a lure along a curved course with turns to simulate chasing prey. Both are fun ways to engage your dog’s natural instincts, but Fast CAT is typically easier for beginners.

No special training is required, but it’s helpful if your dog is familiar with basic recall commands. If you’re unsure, you can enroll in our Fast CAT Introduction and Fun Run class to help your dog get comfortable with the race format and build stamina.

Fast CAT is open to all breeds and mixed-breed dogs. Whether your dog is a fast sprinter like a Greyhound or a smaller breed like a Dachshund, all dogs over 12 months are welcome to join. There are even special points systems based on the size of the dog.

Your dog’s speed is measured using a break-beam timer at the start and finish of the 100-yard track. The time is converted into miles per hour (MPH), and points earned from each race contribute toward AKC Fast CAT titles like BCAT, DCAT, and FCAT.

You can find upcoming events through the AKC Event Finder. For practice and preparation, join our Fast CAT Fun Run class at The Dog Alliance to familiarize your dog with race conditions and connect with other dog lovers.
