How Our Therapy Dog Visits Work

Step 1

Consultation & Goal Setting

We begin by discussing your target audience, setting, and desired outcome (wellness break, launch event, reading hour, etc.). This helps us match the right therapy dog team.

Step 2

Visit Planning & Logistics

Our certified handlers coordinate with your team on timing, location, insurance needs, space setup, and promotional materials. Our training ensures the therapy dog is ready for your environment’s specific demands.

Step 3

On‑site Visit Execution

On visit day, the therapy dog team arrives in uniform, provides a calm, engaging presence, and interacts safely and expertly with your audience. We handle insurance, protocols, and best practices.

Step 3

Follow‑Up & Impact Review

We gather feedback, measure outcomes (stress reduction, morale boost, engagement metrics), and can support you if you want to schedule follow‑up visits or extend into a program.

Pricing & Packages

We offer flexible therapy dog visit packages tailored to your organization’s needs—whether you’re looking for a one-time visit or an ongoing wellness program.

Pricing varies depending on team size, visit frequency, and location. Every visit is led by certified therapy dog teams who have completed our rigorous training and are fully insured for your peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Therapy Dog Visits

Find answers to common questions about our therapy dog visits and how they can assist you.

Our Therapy Dog teams must take a 6‑week in‑person course at the Dog Alliance after the dog has reached one year of age and already knows all the basic cues such as sit, down, come, stay, leave it, loose leash walking, and polite people greeting.

Dogs and their handlers are re‑tested every 3 years.

After the therapy dog course, each handler and dog team are evaluated for twenty different exercises. Half of the exercises test the dog’s ability to execute cues in a new environment so that their behavior is well‑mannered and predictable when they visit your location.

An additional ten exercises evaluate the dog’s suitability as a therapy dog. Exercises include testing the dog with groups of people, with an angry person approaching them, unexpected loud noises, meeting several people at one time, hugging, and petting by a variety of people. If the dog exhibits stress during these exercises or the handler fails to provide the guidance the dog needs to succeed, the handler and dog team will not pass the evaluation. Bow Wow Therapy Dogs are friendly and eager to meet new people of all races, ages, sizes, nationalities, abilities, genders, and religions.

Dog Alliance Therapy Dog teams abide by professional guidelines to help ensure you and your constituents have a very positive experience with the Bow Wow Therapy and Reading Dogs.

In many cases, therapy dog visits are led by trained volunteer teams. These volunteers are covered under The Dog Alliance’s commercial general liability policy, which includes a $2,000,000 aggregate limit and $1,000,000 per occurrence. Additionally, medical expenses are covered up to $50,000 per incident.

Please note: This coverage does not extend to volunteers bringing therapy dogs to their own workplace (e.g., a school librarian using their dog at school). In those cases, either the individual or the employer must provide insurance for the handler.

Employees and independent contractors serving as therapy dog handlers are covered through separate commercial and general liability policies.

Most local school districts within a 50-mile radius of Austin already have The Dog Alliance’s insurance documentation on file. We recommend confirming coverage with your organization’s Risk Management office.

Yes. All Dog Alliance volunteers and staff over the age of 17 must pass a comprehensive background check before working with the public.

As of July 2021, background checks are processed through Sterling Volunteers using a Level 3 criminal history screening. (Prior to that, checks were done through Intellicorp.) This extensive process includes:

  • 50-State DOJ Sex Offender Registry Search
  • Terrorist Watch List Screening
  • Validated Nationwide Criminal Record Search
  • Current County of Residence Check
  • 7-Year County Search Based on Address History (via SSN)
  • Direct Arrest Record Search
  • Ongoing Monthly Record Monitoring

These background checks help ensure the safety and well-being of the individuals, schools, businesses, and healthcare facilities our therapy dog teams serve.

All therapy dogs in our program are bathed within 48 hours before a client visit to minimize shedding and allergens. For school and library programs, we recommend obtaining signed permission slips from parents, and participants with allergies should remain respectfully pet‑free unless cleared otherwise.

While our handlers will need to know where to take the therapy dog for potty breaks, there is no need to host visits outdoors unless your event is already planned outside. We aim to keep both the dog and handler comfortable in all environments.

All therapy dogs are over a year old and have completed extensive training, making potty accidents extremely rare. Additionally, dogs are bathed and brushed within 24 hours prior to each visit to reduce shedding.
