Key Tips for Hiking with Your Dog
Know the Rules
Always check if dogs are allowed on the trail you’re visiting. Follow local guidelines and respect the environment to protect wildlife and ecosystems.
Stay Hydrated
Bring plenty of water for you and your dog. Avoid letting your dog drink from streams or puddles, which may contain harmful bacteria.
B.A.R.K. Rule
– Bag your pet’s waste
– Always leash your dog
– Respect wildlife
– Know where you can go
Prepare for Safety
Use flea and tick preventatives, carry a pet first-aid kit, and check your dog for ticks or burrs after hikes.
Train Before You Hike
Ensure your dog knows basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “leave it.” A reliable recall is crucial for safety on the trail.
Choose the Right Gear
Equip your dog with a sturdy leash, ID tags, and, if needed, dog booties for rough terrain.
